Through the illuminating viewpoint of main subject and co-director, Keagan Anfuso, THE GREY AREA provides an intimate perspective on being a woman who is socially considered masculine. With her athletic build, naturally raspy voice and androgynous fashion preference, Anfuso is often assumed to be male or male-identified. To the surprise of many, she proudly identifies as female. After 20 years of having her gender identity misunderstood, Anfuso‘s experiences tell of an onslaught of judgment, inappropriate assumptions, misunderstandings that turn violent, and how a lack of acceptance from others can derail your life.
With the support of additional voices, Anfuso‘s narrative denotes that amidst the social progress, our society is still struggling to break binary mindsets that continue to place limiting expectations on women. The Grey Area poses the idea that the lingering existence of antiquated gender stereotypes are responsible for oppressing the natural and distinct character of many individuals.
Offering herself as an example, Anfuso‘s intention is to point out the stifling effects that gender stereotyping can have on children and follow into adulthood.
